Facebook Fan Page UsernameIf you can answer “yes” to any of these questions you need to read on:

  • Do you have trouble telling people how to navigate to your Facebook Fan Page?
  • Do you tell prospective students to search for your school’s Facebook Fan Page rather than give them a vanity URL?
  • Do you wish you could have this URL: www.facebook.com/schooname?

Facebook in 2009 announced that Fan Pages could set unique usernames which would create a vanity URL for your Fan Page.  I’ve actually had a lot of people ask how to set these usernames and the directions aren’t easily found on facebook.com so I thought I would outline the steps.

First, you need to have a Facebook individual profile and be logged into your Facebook account.

Second, you need to have at least 25 Fans, or “Likers,” before you can set your Fan Page Username.

Third, navigate to http://www.facebook.com/username and click on “Set a username for your Pages.” (See Figure 1)

Fourth, if you have more than one Facebook Fan Page you will need to select the page that you want to name. (See Figure 2)

Fifth, after selecting the Page you want to name just enter the name that you would like and press the “Check Availability” button.  If there are any conflicts you will need to make changes to your selected username.

Finally, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, when you are satisfied with your Fan Page name and click “Confirm”

“it is not possible to edit it, or to transfer your username to a different account on Facebook. Additionally, when an account is removed from the site, its username will not be made available to other users for security reasons.”

So please make sure that you have spelled everything correctly and are happy with your selection.

After selecting your Fan Page name you can begin using it immediately.  You will now need to make changes to your Fan Page URL anywhere you have used the old URL as a link.

If you have further questions or special circumstances please refer to the Facebook – Help Center for Fan Pages: http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=900

Good luck and if you have any questions or suggestions please make sure to let me know.
