In preparation for the SchneiderB VirCon7, I’m highlighting the eight school marketing experts who will be presenting on October 19, 2019. Learn More about the VirCon7.
Here are the 10 questions and responses from Rick Newberry.
- What is your session title for the VirCon7?
My session is titled “From Word-of-Mouth to the Web: Effective Marketing Strategies for your School.”
2. What will the attendees learn/know after watching your session?
The marketing landscape for private, independent and faith-based schools has changed in recent years. However, word-of-mouth is still the number one way that prospective parents discover your school. Once this discovery is made, the Web search begins for the parent to learn more about your school’s story on your website, social media channels, videos, online reviews and more. During this session, we will explore marketing strategies that are most effective for your school with a specific focus on word-of-mouth and web-based marketing strategies–the two most important strategies for your school.
3. What is your favorite social media channel and why?
Facebook is my favorite social media channel. This is the channel where all of my family and friends are on and I can share in their lives. It is also the primary channel school enrollment and marketing leaders use. Facebook provides an easy way to connect with others.
4. What is one goal that you hope to accomplish during the 2019-2020 school year?
I would like to produce more online content that will help school enrollment and marketing leaders. Through webinars and online courses, I hope to publish a steady stream of content through my company, Enrollment Catalyst.
5. What is your favorite marketing piece of advice for schools?
We all know that word of mouth is the number one way that prospective parents learn about our school. However, very few school leaders have a word of mouth marketing plan in place to drive this effort. It is critical for school leaders to develop and implement a word of mouth marketing plan.
6. What is your favorite marketing book?
My go-to marketing book is Andy Sernovitz’s book: Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking He is the guru on word of mouth marketing and he provides an easy-to-implement framework for developing your plan.
7. What is something people might be surprised to know about you?
Even though I graduated from Michigan State University with my Ph.D., my favorite college team is the Michigan Wolverines. I grew up in Michigan and began rooting for the Wolverines when I was young. Going to MSU did not change my allegiance to the Wolverines. Hail!
8. Kindle or Actual Book?
9. iPhone or Android?
iPhone and everything else Apple!
10. What is one App that you can’t live without?
The Facebook app allows me to quickly connect to my newsfeed.
